Volunteering

Volunteering

We have a wonderful team of volunteers who work with the Community Park Ranger, Rhidri Hughes, to maintain the gardens.

There are a variety of tasks including weeding, trimming, planting, keeping the pathways clean and tidy and maintaining the benches. It’s an excellent way of putting something back into society whilst making friends, keeping fit and enjoying the benefits of fresh air and exercise. It’s a good way of keeping the mind, body and spirit active and engaged. It’s also an opportunity to learn about the history, flora and fauna of the area and the history of those whose graves lie within the grounds.

Our monthly volunteering sessions are friendly, active and include time to socialise over coffee, which is kindly provided by The Fox and Hounds pub.

In 2019 several of our volunteers formed the Friends of St. Mary’s Gardens and are now led by a small committee of members. The Committee organises the volunteer sessions in conjunction with Cardiff Parks’ Department in an effort to keep the Gardens in a condition suitable for public use. The Committee are now actively working towards the addition of Information Boards and increasing publicity to widen awareness of this beautiful haven in the heart of Whitchurch.
